Hey guys, just wanted to share this with you guys. Found this guy in my house and instantly fell in love with his/her curiosity. Really cool little spider with a slight deformity? His/her right palp is bare compared to the left. Found em walking across my ceiling and it’s too cold to put him outside. Since I don’t believe in killing beneficial pests and it’s snowing outside, I decided it was either brave the detached garage or be kept until it warms up. I decided to keep em and learn.

Havent named em yet.
Species Name: Phidippus Audax

I used this spider to do my first lesson on IDing with my 4 yr old son.

I immediately knew it was a jumping spider upon collection, but decided to start from the bottom for his first lesson.
I asked him
What kind of bug is it? Spider
What colors do you see? Brown and black and some white.
Anything stand out? Yellow spot on his butt and he’s fuzzy
Size? Small…lol
Were did we find him? In the house

We then put “small fuzzy Brown and black spider with yellow spot on his butt found in house” into the google and started searching images till we found our match. I taught him the basic questions on how to ID insects and will slowly add in more advanced stuff as he learns. He goes out anting and is always looking for bugs with me. He’s my sidekick.

Nice picture and Cool species too. I had one of these in my habitats. However he just disappeared one day. I am assuming another insect in my habitat had killed it but I am not sure.

Thank you. How can you tell?
And can you tell me why his palp is bare?
