Centruroides gracilis – Florida Bark Scorpion

Hello all. Here is my journal for my Florida Bark Scorpion. I collected this guy on 11/22/16 in the florida keys. He measured 11mm long upon collection. I didn’t have much to house him in, so I’m experimenting with my 117 Nest prototype. So far, it seems to work great. He has already eaten in captivity so im over the first hump.

Meet Jarvis

Thank you for looking.

The Nest is from www.117colonies.com He owns the site. Wink Mainly a ant keeping site, but apparently you can use them for scorpions as well.... obviously.

Does it go back into that little area behind? Is that a moisture control thing?

I have always wanted an ant farm, would be fun to get one for my daughter...

Yes, the front is accessible from the back. Both front and back open and are completely deconstruct able for maintenance.

Oh man, i didnt see these replies.

The nest itself is designed to hold an Ant colony. I had this prototype laying around and decided to see how well the scorpion takes to it. So far it has been a success.

The current insert he is in can be swapped with other styles with various sized caverns and hydration systems. If this turns out to be a good fit for scorps and other creatures that inhabit the underside of rocks and debris, i will create a full sized setup for longer term housing, and larger sized creatures.

This is my first pet scorpion. I know nothing about taking care of them other then knowing their natural habitat and nesting site. So far i feel like i'm doing good at keeping him happy. Any tips or help?

Does he sting what he eats? I know some species will sting everything they eat and others only do it if there life is endangered.

Just from my knowledge, C.gracilis is a scorpion that likes it humid (so if you are keeping it like where you found him, which you said in florida, then he should be good). C.gracilis is of Centruroides which are most commonly known as the bark scorpions so a hiding place is most recommended as since Jarvis is obviously a little baby (or juvi), he will need a place to molt, such as a vertical piece of cork bark for example. As this is Centruroides gracilis, it is also recommended to not get stung lol. I'm planning to buy a few to start a small colony soon. Nice you got yours for free xD I should know a little bit more info but if you need some more less obvious info please ask and I might know.

Any idea what the life span is, in captivity or natural environment?

I have the plants in my outworld but i'm assuming he'll need something better? Also, think it would hurt to purchase another 1 or 2? Twas hoping it wouldnt be bad i'f i joined him with a captive bread companion.

Making sure it has a vertical molting surface is key. It can probably molt on the ground without any issues, but a vertical surface will decrease the chance that it has a bad molt. Other then that, good humidity and maybe an extra hide and it'll be fine. Life span is usually a couple years in captivity, with females living a bit longer.

It is recommended to set up communal for C.gracilis when they are adults. Before adulthood they have a larger chance of cannibalism.
