Very dark, slick and shinny, so sort of hard to obtain a real good photo.

No, the photo is just fine! I would have thought it was under more than under a magnification of x7, but I guess not.

Under the stereo scope the photo just looks larger without a scale to go by. At x15 you would only obtain about half of this beetle and be off scale. I did add a little digital camera zoom to fill the eyepiece diameter circle, so the mag could be around x9 or x10, estimated.

I have had the opportunity to collect two of these while in the southern US, I guess they must be pretty common?

We do have a good many of them over in one corner of our property, of mostly oak forest and a lot of other dead and rotten trees.
No clean up is needed, nature does the work.
